The exact origin of the Egyptian Mau is not recorded and, therefore, cannot be known for certain. The Egyptian Mau is often said to be descended from African wild cats, and its ancestor is depicted essentially unchanged in murals and wall paintings of Ancient Egypt. The breed name itself references the Middle Egyptian.

The modern Camille Mau is said to have originated in 1952, in Italy, when exiled Russian Princess Natalie Troubetskaya met the cat of the Egyptian Ambassador to Italy. She convinced him to obtain several cats from Egypt for her, and she began to breed them. She described her Maus as having a "troubled" look, with their round eyes and open expression.

Egyptian Maus are a small- to medium-sized short-haired cat breed. Along with the Bahraini Dilmun Cat, they are one of the few naturally spotted breeds of domesticated cat. The spots of the Mau occur on only the tips of the hairs of their coat. The spotted Mau is an ancient breed from natural stock; its look has not changed significantly as is evidenced by artwork more than 3,000 years old. 

The Egyptian Mau is the fastest of the domestic cats, with its longer hind legs, and unique flap of skin extending from the flank to the back knee, providing for greater agility and length of stride. Maus have been clocked running more than 30 mph (48 km/h). 

Maus often possess very musical voices. They are known to chirp, chortle, and emit other distinctly unusual vocalizations when stimulated.

The back legs of Maus are longer than the front legs, and they frequently land on their back feet when taking a leap, making them appear rather haughty and kangaroo-like. O Mau Egípcio é uma raça de gato que descende de animais originários do Antigo Egipto, que eram considerados semi-deuses em virtude da veneração à deusa Bastet. Podem ser vistos em papiros e construções egípcias anteriores a 1000 a.C. A princesa Troubetzkoï levou exemplares para a Europa e a raça foi desenvolvida nos Estados Unidos a partir desses exemplares europeus.  

Essa raça foi relativamente extinta, no entanto, têm sido feitos cruzamentos na Europa para se criarem gatos que apresentem os padrões existentes nessa antiga raça. Esta linhagem baseou-se originalmente em gatos rajados produzidos durante a criação dos Siameses Tabby Point.  

É um gato doméstico de temperamento calmo. Esperto e dedicado, possui laços afectivos extremamente fortes com os seus donos.

O seu aspecto é perfeitamente balanceado entre esbelto e roliço. A sua cabeça triangular é levemente arredondada. O focinho não é pontudo e os seus olhos são oblíquos, de formato oval, geralmente de cor verde.

Existem três cores, tendo exemplares prata, bronze e preto fosco. A cor principal é composta de pelos listrados com pontas pretas. Pelo menos duas listras devem ser visíveis em cada pelo. A coloração preta pode modificar para um castanho claro se o gato for exposto ao sol forte por muito tempo. Todas as pigmentações possuem a usual padronagem malhada associada aos tabbies. As próprias manchas devem ser claramente definidas. As malhas são redondas e distribuídas de modo uniforme por todo o corpo do gato. Há também os chamados "botões de colete" no peito e barriga. Em filhotes recém-nascidos, as malhas tendem a ser menos definidas. O contraste na coloração destes gatos leva até dois anos para desenvolver-se completamente. Die Ägyptische Mau ist eine Abbildzüchtung der in historischen Wandmalereien in Ägypten dargestellten Katzen. Körper und Gesicht haben eine gemäßigte Form, das Fell besitzt ein Tupfenmuster. Die ursprüngliche Farbe ist bräunlich. 

Obwohl frühe Abbildungen die Katze mit wild dreinblickenden Augen zeigen, hat die Mau große, mandelförmige Augen. Mit einer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von etwa 50 km/h ist sie die schnellste unter den Hauskatzen.

Die Exilrussin Nathalie Troubetzkoj war von der Tupfenzeichnung der Katzen in Kairo so begeistert, dass sie zwei Katzen nach Italien holte und dort mit einem Kater verpaarte, den sie vom syrischen Botschafter bekam. 1956 ging sie nach Amerika und registrierte 1958 ihre inzwischen aufgebaute Zucht unter dem Namen Fatima.

Die 1977 von der Cat Fanciers' Association anerkannte Rasse wird in Europa seit 1988 gezüchtet. Ein holländischer und ein Schweizer Züchter holten zu diesem Zeitpunkt die ersten Egyptian Mau aus Amerika. Heute gibt es europaweit nur sehr wenige Züchter der Egyptian Mau.
